Despite the laws of 1907 and 1912 which limited the alcohol content, the wormwood (absinthe) extract content and the thuyone content, it is the 1st World War which leads to the prohibition of the “green fairy”. The General Galopin, knowing “the misdeed” of the beverage on the endurance and strentgh on the soldiers, prohibits the selling to the military and to civilians in the region of Nice. The iniciative extends to the whole France and, on 17th of March 1915, a law is published in the Official Journal. It prohibits : “Production, wholesale and retail as well as the circulation of absinthe and similar liqueurs.” |
